Trauma in Miami, FL

Don't listen to what anybody says. Go for your goal. Don't give up!

Q: What made you want to become a nurse?
A: I think I was definitely drawn to the adrenaline rush of being a nurse and saving patients. Growing up I had a sister who was disabled and so I was always like a caregiver to her. I was her guardian, her bodyguard and her advocate in many situations, so I think that's part of why I wanted to become a nurse, too.

Q: What experience in your career has had the biggest impact on you?
A: I must say the biggest impact is when I go out to the community or when I teach our local EMS, firefighters, and paramedics. When they're able to apply that knowledge they learned especially from me and my colleagues to a patient who's had a traumatic accident it's a very powerful thing. Some of these patients I never see, but I know my commitment to teaching our local first responders really makes a difference. I'm very proud of that.

Q: What's the best piece of nursing advice you've ever received?
A: It was years ago- from a colleague of mine that I actually work with now. He was in trauma at the time and I really looked up to him. He always told me 'Don't listen to your friends. Don't listen to what anyone says. Go for your goal. Don't give up!' Sometimes when you listen to the chatter you can get caught up in what they have planned for you. So don't lose sight of your own plan.

Q: What is the most important goal you hope to accomplish as a nurse?
A: My plan was to become a nurse, working at a trauma center and I accomplished that goal. It took a long time and it was a lot of hard work, but I'm where I want to be.

Q: What's the one item you can't live without at work every day?
A: It's these trusty trauma shears! In the trauma world, you know, being a trauma ninja as I like to call it, good shears are an excellent piece of equipment to have. I also always have eye protection and gloves.

Q: What scrubs are you wearing right now and how do they feel?
A: I'm wearing allheart Elate scrubs and I feel very comfortable in them. I find that they're durable and I'm a big pocket person so I like all of the pockets.
